ABOUT
I’m Dr Michelle Ulor, a music psychologist, DJ, writer, and consultant with a passion for exploring the transformative power of music on mental wellbeing. My career is marked by diverse roles and collaborations with leading companies like Soho House, BBC Radio, and the ICA. Whether through academic research, dynamic DJ sets, or strategic startup consultancy, I’m dedicated to leveraging the intersection of music and psychology to create meaningful impact.
Research
My research journey began at Goldsmiths, where I earned a BSc (Hons) in Psychology and an MSc in Music, Mind & Brain, followed by a PhD in Music Psychology at the University of Leeds. My doctoral work was pioneering, being the first to test a musical imagery-based intervention for anxiety and mood improvement. This research has been shared in top journals and at international conferences, reflecting my commitment to advancing our understanding of music’s role in mental health.
Throughout my career, I’ve remained deeply engaged with the academic community, from teaching Psychology undergraduates to organising conferences that bridge the gap between research and practice. My involvement in mentoring PhD students and leading collaborative projects focused on arts-based interventions further highlights my dedication to the crossover between research and real-world application.
VC/Startups
In addition to my academic work, I have extensive experience in the startup and venture capital (VC) sectors. I’ve worked closely with VC-backed mental health companies through Zinc’s venture builder programme, bringing academic insights into the startup world. My expertise in research strategy, grant applications, and mixed-methods approaches has made me a sought-after consultant in the industry. I’ve also played a key role in the Newton Venture Program, where I designed and delivered an educational training programme for aspiring venture capitalists, blending academic knowledge with practical industry insights.
DJ/Radio
Music has always been central to my life, leading me to become a DJ with over a decade of experience. I’ve performed at events worldwide, for clients like Adidas and LocalGlobe VC, and held a five-year residency on NTS Radio. Currently, I host a weekly show on Ambient Flo, curating a soothing auditory experience that reflects my belief in music’s power to enhance wellbeing. My diverse and eclectic sets ensure that each performance is a memorable experience.
Journalism
As a writer, I’m dedicated to showcasing underground music talent and bringing fresh voices to the forefront of the club and ambient music scenes. My work, featured in outlets like Resident Advisor, Crack Magazine, and Electronic Beats, includes reviews, interviews, and artist features, all aimed at highlighting the rich diversity of global music culture.
